Galway first appears in history as a Royal Gaelic Fort in the year 1124. After its Norman conquest in the early 13th century the fort of Galway was replaced by a stone castle and hall. In 1484 King Richard lll of England granted the town a charter, giving the town independence from outside control and transferring power to the leading merchant families, the fourteen tribes of Galway. The newly independent and powerful City-State traded in wine, salt, fish and iron and became the next port after London and Bristol. The wealth of its citizens was expressed in the many fine stone-faced buildings such as Lynch’s castle. Galway City is now the capital of the west of Ireland, a vibrant University City and an important centre for promoting the arts and culture.
